ASBMB @ UNM:
Our current ASBMB student chapter at UNM was founded in Fall 2023, when we established our national registration with the ASBMB, and drafted a new constitution, and set of by-laws to become chartered with the UNM SAC.
We value an enriched experience for undergraduates in biochemistry and molecular biology and seek to reinforce our academic efforts with dynamic skill-building through social, professional, and community outreach events. Our mission is to provide a space outside the classrooms and labs where each student, regardless of their expertise level, can access powerful resources to propel them through their personal journey. Among our assets, we count the insight of our peers, the advice of our faculty sponsors, and the wealth of resources from our national society.
Our general organizational meetings are utilized for planning activities that serve our evolving membership. We are evolving a framework of empowerment for our members and society around us.
Goals
- Research exploration and participation focus: Find your field(s) of interest, from reviewing published reports to approaching potential mentors.
- Investigating the medical field: Learn what it takes to become a proficient medicine-related professional; develop practical timelines and avoid pitfalls.
- Presentation skill-building: Utilize peer and campus resources to learn how to bridge the gap between doing science and communicating your progress; practice for local and national conferences.
- Community empowerment: Discover the bidirectionality of giving; stimulate scientific awareness to fuel the next generation of biochemists; encourage biomolecular understanding for a healthier society.
- Regeneration through recreation: Recharge yourself and your studies by taking time to enjoy camaraderie and have fun during group outings.

The University of New Mexico
Founded in 1889 as New Mexico’s flagship institution, The University of New Mexico now occupies nearly 800 acres near old Route 66 in the heart of Albuquerque, a metropolitan area of more than 900,000 people.
