2023-2024 Officers and Advisors

In the wake of COVID-19, we newly formed our national affiliation with the American Society for Biochemistry and Microbiology, and our charter with the University of New Mexico, including our constitution, by-laws, and goals, for Fall 2023.

Collaborative Support:

Nicholas Redhouse

Very special thanks go to Nick for his devotion and moral support outside of a specific organizational role assignment and despite a very full schedule.  Your consistently positive attitude and effort were invaluable to our ongoing success.

Faculty Advisor:

Laura de Lorenzo Barrios, PhD

Dr. de Lorenzo heads the undergraduate program for UNM's BMB department.  She teaches Biochemical Methods, vital to degree completion and professional competence, and launched the ÉLITE Career Mentoring Program to further inspire and propel students toward successful futures. Laura was a driving force in our re-establishment and a steadfast source of procedural advice.

Faculty Advisor:

William "Curt" Hines, PhD

Dr. Hines directs the BMB Honors program, designed to actively engage students in research, as well as his own lab researching breast cancer.  He also lectures as part of the Biochemistry of Disease series, to share his insight beyond the lab.  Curt was instrumental in our building enthusiasm, and a peer support attitude into the organization by reminding us to have fun.

Archived 2017 Chapter Statements and Photos

During our comprehensive reconstruction of this website, the decision was made to maintain the photos and personal statements below in recognition of our pre-pandemic counterparts, whose efforts initially established a web presence in 2017. Despite our distance from them in time and space we are connected through our enthusiasm for biochemistry and molecular biology.

President:  Celene Woolley

Hi everyone! I’m Celene, and I am a third year biochemistry student at the University of New Mexico. I’m from Farmington, New Mexico, but moved to Albuquerque to attend UNM. After I receive my degree, I’d like to attend medical school and eventually specialize in oncology. In my free time, I love spending time with my family, going camping, traveling, and cooking.

Vice President:  Carolina Castiblanco

I was born in Bogota, Columbia and I moved here about nine years ago. I am majoring in Biochemistry with a second major in Spanish. My favorite subject is Chemistry and I am also a TA for General Chemistry I and II

Treasurer:  Joey Ochoa

The arbitrator who safeguards ASBMB's assets and prevents the club from falling into the red. Also handles relationships with SGAO and maintains the accuracy of ASBMB's finances.

Secretary:  Tommy Soudachanh

Hello! I’m Tommy, and I am a fourth year biochemistry student. Currently, I study the pathway of muscle development in Drosophila Melanogaster and tutor children in mathematics.

Recruitment Specialist: Daniel Wilson

The publicist who recruits new members, spreads ads like wildfire, and keep members in the loop through ASBMB's syndicate.

Faculty Advisor: Dr. Martina Rosenberg

Rosenberg received her MSc (1992) and PhD (2000) in biochemistry from Freie Universitaet in Berlin, Germany. After moving to the US she first studied signal transduction in cancer biology and then fetal alcohol-related learning disorders of learning and memory. During that time she rekindled her interest in the scholarship of teaching and learning in the STEM-H disciplines and made the transition from bench work to discipline-based education research. She joined UNM in 2000 as a research scientist and became part of the education faculty in 2012.
